Policy is the New Battlefield for Communicating Your Innovation Story

I am excited to share that Mission North has launched a Public Affairs practice to help our clients navigate the new regulatory and policy environment that has been disrupted by the current Administration, changing media landscape, and rapid rise of AI.

In 2025 alone, the Administration rolled out multiple executive orders on AI, state legislatures have continued to introduce hundreds of new AI-focused bills, and national AI policies are exploding worldwide. The operating environment for enterprise technology, financial services, healthcare, research-backed life sciences organizations, energy, public safety, and manufacturing is just as dynamic. Meanwhile, the rules for engaging with policymakers and opinion shapers have fundamentally changed.

The world is moving faster, and it’s not waiting for you. Every company with an innovation story — whether you are a growth-stage disruptor or a member of the top technology organizations globally — needs to adapt, and quickly.

Leaders Can’t Afford Communications Silos

For communicators, this moment brings both pressure and possibility. The pressure is real: the critical functions of product communications, corporate reputation, and public affairs have often been siloed. Splitting them across multiple specialty shops, or parking it all at a global agency, creates friction, increases risk and forces brands to choose between specialization and scale. Companies that marry these functions can shape crucial regulatory discussions, lead the conversation on key national, state and local issues, and fortify their license to innovate, before policy decisions are made for them.

At Mission North, we’re seeing this shift firsthand. Forward-looking leaders (including our clients) are treating government affairs and policies as a growth lever, not just  part of a compliance checklist. Proactively engaging with policy makers and shapers about your responsible innovation strategy and communicating a cohesive narrative to all audiences doesn’t only protect your license to innovate, it accelerates it.

Expanding Mission North’s Corporate Offering through Public Affairs

To meet this moment, we’ve expanded our Corporate capabilities with a new Public Affairs practice. It’s designed for consequential companies navigating high-stakes, high-scrutiny environments where policy and reputation intersect. This new offering builds on the momentum of our Corporate practice, which is now on pace to triple in 2025 as companies look to us to help tell a more cohesive story to a broader set of audiences and stakeholders.

The Public Affairs practice is led by Emily Field, a deeply curious strategist with Washington, D.C. roots. She has extensive experience advising federally funded research institutions, workforce development coalitions, and government affairs and policy teams at leading technology, healthcare, cybersecurity, and education organizations. Emily understands how influence is built in D.C., how reputations are built (or broken) in regulated industries, and how leadership teams can advance credibility at the increasingly complex federal, state, and local levels.

The opportunity for organizations to influence policy and expand their credibility among crucial stakeholders in D.C. and beyond has never been greater. We're proud to help innovators lead the public conversation on some of the most complex issues of our time, from powering the AI boom to advancing national security through next gen technology to improving public health outcomes.

Translating Regulation Into Reputation

With this expansion, we’re helping our clients:

  • Shape policy narratives with clear messaging, briefs, and testimony on AI, cybersecurity, fintech, and life sciences.
  • Build stakeholder coalitions with industry associations, community leaders, and opinion formers.
  • Plan and prepare for anticipated regulatory changes through legislative analysis and strategic counsel.
  • Protect and strengthen corporate reputation in moments of heightened policy and public scrutiny.

Don’t Choose Between Specialization and Scale

Whether you're an emerging startup or an established global player, one thing is clear: policy decisions now shape product roadmaps, market entry, investor perception, and the ability to create real insights and change. Organizations need an integrated corporate, product, and policy communications strategy built to meet the moment. If this resonates with you, we're here to help. Reach out to us to get started.
