Supporting a Better, Bio-Based Future with BioDesign Challenge

||||||||

Biotech's impact on industry and in daily lives is growing rapidly. It's changing the medicines we take, how we power our homes, the food we eat and the clothes we wear. Tapping into the power of biology enables us to treat diseases with more precision and make the products we love and rely on more sustainably. But as this market continues to evolve, it's worth posing big questions about how the rise of biotech will impact our society, and both the implications and possibilities it could have depending on who wields its power.

It's these ponderings that led Dan Grushkin to found the Biodesign Challenge, an international student competition and educational program that partners high school and university students with artists, designers, and scientists to imagine, create and critique the future of biotechnology. Competitors are challenged to develop bold projects that use biotechnology to address pressing issues or to critique biotechnology’s impact on society and present them to a panel of judges made up of art, design and biotech leaders.

Mission North partnered with the Biodesign Challenge for the second year in a row to help bring more visibility to the organization and rally its community to celebrate the organization's five-year anniversary. Our challenge? Design a series of shareable visual assets that honor BDC's impressive growth and evolution, engage its global community, and expand the reach of this content to a larger audience.

Mission North got right to work and developed a five-part Instagram story honoring the organization’s  founding story, highlighting participants and “where they are now,” and showcasing its massive global growth. We were thrilled to see BDC unveil it this week as a precursor to the kickoff  of the 2020 summit (register here to tune in throughout the week from June 15 -19!). With this year's summit being entirely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital assets to help drive awareness of the event  are even more meaningful. Check out the designs on BDC's Instagram highlights, or see a few examples below.

We also encourage you to peruse BDC's  new online magazine, Biodesigned. Last month Jordyn Lee and I sat down with Christina Agapakis, creative director at Ginkgo Bioworks, to discuss the importance of good science communication during COVID-19. Check out our featured article here.
