RSA 2019: Celebrating Security Outliers with a Starphish in Hand

It is a tradition that Mission North brings together journalists, hackers, researchers and cybersecurity pros each RSA to escape the chaos of the conference for drinks and fun. We want to create a space to mingle without an agenda while connecting reporters with new and interesting sources. This year’s party was a lively evening that brought together reporters from The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Reuters, Forbes, Politico, Cyberscoop, The CyberWire and The Parallax.

This year, we hosted in partnership with Mission North client and Alphabet cybersecurity moonshot Chronicle. The party coincided with Chronicle’s first product launch, Backstory, a security data platform that enables companies to privately upload, store and analyze their internal security telemetry to detect and investigate potential cyber threats. Backstory gives enterprises an enormous advantage in the fight against cybercriminals and nation-states. Earlier in the day, Chronicle hosted 28 reporters at a press event to announce the launch.

The theme of this year’s party was Security Outliers. We chose to celebrate those who don’t follow the beaten path, whether they are companies, technologies or individuals that question today’s norms and tackle big security problems with creative approaches.

Reality Thief Brad Barton keeps his audience on their toes with his mind games.

“Reality Thief” Brad Barton joined us for magic, mentalism and mischief. Guests were also invited to partner up and play a game to avoid being phished, infected, breached, rooted and pwned — with a chance to win astronaut ice cream.

Two guests work together to avoid being pwned.

The crew at Southside Spirit House spent the evening mixing up cosmic concoctions honoring Security Outliers, including the Starphish, the Moonshot and the Data(Quiri).

Come join the fun at next year's RSA!
